Olympic Games, Sydney - September 2000
The ADF's contribution to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
Joint Task Force (JTF) Gold, formed to provide security and general support for the games, was drawn from all three services and approximately 4000 ADF personnel. The JTF consisted of several unit sized elements, including personnel from 4 RAR (Cdo), each responsible for specific security or general support.
Since the terrorist attack against Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, security at subseqent Olympic Games have been a high priority for organisers and hosting nations. Therefore, the Australian Government directed the ADF to provided standby Domestic Counter-Terrorism support to JTF Gold at all Olympic venues throughout Sydney and other Olympic locations around Australia.
